| Synaesthesia is a complex inter-linking of the human senses, where two or more senses are able to interpret an external stimulus at one time, causing a multiple sensation. For example: on hearing music, a synaesthete may visualise colours; or, a synaesthete may associate tastes with particular words... I first became aware of synaesthesia after hearing a television documentary on the condition. Until this point, I was aware that I experienced multiple sensations, but thought it was quite common, especially in those who are active within the arts. I have since discovered, synaesthesia is very rare, and can occur through a variety of causes, affecting individuals in very different ways. I believe my synaesthesia occured after the loss of my sight, resulting in the heightend sensitivity of my hearing and touch. I don't specifically remember a moment where I experienced more than one sensation, but I do remember it happening very soon after my sight became of no longer use. My synaesthesia involves hearing, touch, and visual imagery. I first became fascinated in the concept of "hearing colours" and "feeling sound"..., when studying the organ music of Messiaen, himself a noted synaesthete, during my BMus. I was then more able to identify my synaesthesia as being real, which compelled me to make use of it, and to research it further. Section Contents
